The Best IKEA Hacks to Upgrade Your Furniture

An IKEA hack is a when you take an IKEA product and upgrade it in some way that makes it more functional, beautiful, or both.

It’s an easy way to update the look and feel of a piece you’ve had for a while, and is often more affordable than buying an entirely new item.

Are you an IKEA hacker looking for inspiration? Do you want to modify your IKEA furniture? These companies are for you!

While there are lots of ways to DIY (“do it yourself,” for the uninitiated), there are also a range of companies that have sprung up over the last few years that provide these hacks for you.

The best of them make your IKEA furniture last longer and look expensive. This includes adding legs to IKEA cabinets, adding cabinet faces to IKEA kitchens, and adding cabinet pulls to IKEA wardrobes.

We’ve put together a list of our favorites so that you can hack everything from your kitchen to your minimalist Scandinavian design couch.

These are the best high-quality IKEA hack companies for upgrading your furniture:

List Marker: Number 3Semihandmade

Similar to reform, Semihandmade offers kitchen, bathroom and cabinet fronts. The fronts are fairly basic in terms of design but are sturdy and top quality, so it’s more about creating better quality version of the pieces you have than it is about re-designing them.

List Marker: Number 5Bemz

IKEA sofas and chairs can last for years, but the fabric can start to show wear quite quickly. While some seating has removable covers, there are many that don’t. When those stains just aren’t coming off any more, Bemz can help you out.

They produce high-quality covers for a huge range of chairs and sofas from IKEA. And if you’re just bored with your biege sofa but don’t want to buy a new one just yet, Bemz’s wide variety of colors and patterns lets you play around with your furniture. Each cover is made-to-order to cut down on textile waste. This IKEA hack has been a favourite of Swedes for years, and the world is starting to catch on.

We recommend

Combining the IKEA Söderhamn sofa with Bemz covers. It’s a match made in heaven. The Söderhamn by far one of IKEA’s most classic and streamlined sofas, with a flexible modular shape. Also, it’s super comfy, even as an extra bed for guests!

List Marker: Number 6Norse Interiors

Swedish brand Norse Interiors makes front paneling for dressers, nightstands, and storage cabinets, as well as a few handles and legs. The number of IKEA designs that Norse Interiors can accommodate is quite small, but they are popular models.

While they don’t have any GURSKEN panels, they do have MALM dress drawer fronts, BESTA aabinet doors and panels, and SEKTION sideboard doors & panels.

They have a “ready-to-ship” section that ships out within seven business days. We recommend their cane doors and walnut finishes and fronts that can completely overhaul your IKEA Bestå pieces of various sizes.

Prettypegs was founded to extend the life of IKEA furniture, and to highlight that small details can make a big difference. The Swedish brand began with a range of legs for tables, storage, sofas, and beds – these legs not only improve quality, but give a little personality to an oft-forgotten feature.

Prettypegs now also makes front layers for IKEA Bestå pieces, and handles.

Do you have more IKEA Hack questions? Take a look at our FAQs to discover more ways to upgrade your furniture:

Can I still use IKEA furniture warranties after hacking?

This might go without saying, but in most cases, modifying IKEA furniture will void its warranty. The warranty typically covers manufacturing defects and issues arising from normal use but usually excludes changes in the structure, appearance, or any other aspect of the product. Any modifications may be considered as altering the intended use of the product.

How do you fill the PAX shelf holes to create a built-in look?

To achieve a built-in look with IKEA PAX shelves, the best method of filling the holes is using wood filler.

This process involves selecting a wood filler that matches the shelves’ color, applying the filler with a putty knife, and allowing it to dry. If the Pax shelves have a specific finish, painting the filled areas with a gloss paint is recommended for a cohesive appearance.

We have found that wood filler is better than VARIERA hole caps because it provides a seamless appearance by creating a smooth surface that closely matches the surrounding wood. Also, it allows you to cover any other holes too, for a seamless finish.
