Artist Spotlight: Painter Max Frintrop at Andersen’s Contemporary Gallery

If you haven’t made your way out to Andersen’s Contemporary Gallery on Amager Strandvej in Copenhagen, consider yourself encouraged to do so. Located in the back of a series of industrial buildings along the road, the space itself is worth the trip. Large, high-ceilinged, white and light-filled, it’s an ideal spot for showcasing large, powerful canvases.

The current artist on exhibition, Max Frintrop, couldn’t be better suited for those walls. The German painter, who has been featured in solo and group shows since graduating from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2009. Born in Oberhausen but now based in Düsseldorf, Frintrop is a painter known for his abstracted geometric shapes, visible brushstrokes and incredibly intriguing use of color.

He’s a painter’s painter – one who names each of his pieces for something memorable that’s going on in his life while he paints so that he can maintain an emotional connection to each one.

“When someone says, ‘I have Untitled (2010)’ or ‘I saw #77’ you have to strain to remember which painting they’re actually talking about. I don’t do that.” Frintrop explains with a laugh.

This art is best understood by just spending some time with it, so take a look through the gallery with us. If you’re inspired, head to the show itself, on until 13th November.
