Covering the Barbara i Gongini runway show is always a trip. This was our third season, and this is brand that manages to build on its own legacy while making each collection just different enough from the last.
For AW15, the silhouette was just slightly more fitted overall than before. While traditionally the look is almost entirely black, this collection saw more grey and white additions, which was welcome in this Copenhagen winter’s sea of darkness. Knee high black socks and black The Last Conspiracy boots completed each look.
The backstage atmosphere at a Barbara i Gongini stands in stark contrast to the show itself, which is strange and almost a-tonal. The production is tight, fast-paced and ambitious, while taking real pleasure in all that goes into a runway show. If these people weren’t all draped in layers of black, they could be cheerleaders about to execute a particularly difficult combination.
As always, hair and make-up was other-worldly, but with a focus on pumped up, frizzy hair that partially covered the face. I actually wrote down, “hairstylists are defying the laws of physics.”
When the show begins, models stomp down the catwalk like sexy aliens while two musicians in full-Gongini garb produce animal, spacey sounds right on the runway. It’s fashion for another planet, but one that I definitely want to visit.
