The idea that birth order shapes who you become, the responsible firstborn, the peacekeeping middle child, the free-spirited youngest, has circulated as pop psychology for so long that it can be surprising to learn how thoroughly researchers have tried, and mostly failed, to find it. The most decisive attempt came from Julia Rohrer, Boris Egloff, and Stefan Schmukle, who in 2015 pooled data on more than 20,000 adults across three long-running national panels, the German Socio-Economic Panel, the American National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, and Britain’s National Child Development Study, specifically to settle the question with a sample large enough to catch even a small effect if one existed. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the analysis found that central personality traits such as extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, and conscientiousness are not affected by birth-order position.

A null result three countries agreed on

What makes the finding hard to argue with is that three separate countries, with three different family structures, welfare systems, and cultural expectations about siblings, all produced the same answer, and the sample size only reinforces it. If birth order reshaped personality through some general psychological process, that process should have left at least a faint trace in one of the three panels. It didn’t. Firstborns were not consistently more conscientious, later-borns were not consistently more rebellious or agreeable, and the tidy roles pop psychology assigns to each position in the family lineup simply didn’t appear in the data once the sample was large enough to trust.

The one place the null result didn’t hold

The same dataset that cleared personality of any birth-order effect did turn up a small but real difference elsewhere: intelligence. Rohrer and her colleagues found a small decline in objectively measured intelligence from first-born to last-born children, alongside a similar pattern in self-reported intellect, with firstborns reporting a stronger vocabulary and less difficulty with abstract concepts. Stefan Schmukle, one of the study’s authors, was careful about the size of what they’d found, telling the press that the effect is “barely meaningful on the individual level, because it is extremely small.” A parent or teacher would not actually notice this in day-to-day life; the pattern only becomes visible once tens of thousands of people are pooled together, a statistical signal rather than a prediction about any one child.

The effect is too small to tell you anything about one particular child, and too consistent across three countries to dismiss as noise.

Where that small gap probably comes from

The 2015 study wasn’t designed to explain why the intelligence effect exists, only to confirm that it does. For a plausible mechanism, the sociologist Douglas Downey’s work on family size and cognitive development points toward what researchers call resource dilution: parental resources are spread thinner with more siblings. A firstborn child gets an initial stretch, sometimes years, of a parent’s undivided time, conversation, and teaching attention before any sibling arrives to share it. Every child born after that one enters a household where the same finite pool of parental time, patience, and one-on-one instruction is already being divided at least one more way, and that division doesn’t reverse itself as the family grows. It isn’t that later-born children are loved less or taught less deliberately. It’s that the total supply of a parent’s individual attention is fixed in a way family size isn’t, and the arithmetic of dividing it among more children falls hardest on whoever arrived after the dividing had already started.

Worth flagging plainly: resource dilution explains a correlation; researchers have not demonstrated it as a direct cause-and-effect chain inside any one family, and other variables move alongside birth order too. Larger families also tend to have somewhat different average income, parental age, and household routines than smaller ones, and untangling how much of the small IQ gap belongs to attention specifically, as opposed to these other factors that shift alongside family size, is still an open question in the literature. The honest version of the finding is narrower than a headline about siblings stealing your intelligence: something about being born later in a larger family very modestly predicts a lower measured IQ, and diminishing parental attention is the best-supported explanation researchers currently have for why.

What this actually means for a parent of more than one child

None of this is a case for treating children differently based on birth order, and the effect size itself argues against reading too much into any single child’s position in the family. What the resource-dilution mechanism does offer is something more useful than a birth-order stereotype: a description of where a family’s undivided attention actually goes by default, and a reason to notice when a younger child is quietly getting less of the one-on-one conversation, reading time, or patient explanation that an older sibling received before the family got bigger.

The personality result is, in a sense, the more reassuring finding of the two. A parent doesn’t need to engineer birth order to shape who a child becomes, because it mostly isn’t doing that in the first place. The intelligence finding is the one worth actually acting on. The gap itself is small, but the mechanism behind it is specific enough to know what to do about it: notice where the undivided attention has drifted, and make sure it still reaches whoever arrived last.
