We’re in our third month of lockdown 2.0 in Copenhagen, and while most restaurants and bars aren’t open yet (unless it’s for takeaway), stores under 500 square meters have opened again. So there is some light at the end of the tunnel!

But until all of our favorites are able to open up for patrons again, we’ll just have to keep enjoying takeaways in the comfort of our own home. It’s not so bad when the food is this good.

These three establishments have all opened recently and are navigating not only being new eateries, but also experiencing the food industry at a unique and difficult time. Let’s show them some love!

Here are the best new takeaway spots in Copenhagen this month:

Otto Pizza

We all love our pizza, from your local joint to the more upmarket pizzerias in town. Located on the charming street of Værnedamsvej, Otto Pizza prides itself on Neapolitan style pizza. Founder Rasmus Oubæk explains, “We own the Jagger restaurants and wanted to make a similar concept focused on pizza. We wanted to make it affordable while keeping the quality of ingredients high.”

As with the Jagger restaurants, The emphasis on quality is seen from the ingredients right down to the slick interior. The menu consists of ten different pizzas ranging from the classic magherita pizza to something a little more adventurous like potato, rosemary & mascarpone.

I opted for the #3 on the menu, which consisted of Nduja sausage, tomato, an- basil. A stand-out feature at Otto is the light, bread-like dough which complements all the toppings (from my point of view, it can be eaten on its own!).

If you’re not in the mood to wait in line for a pizza, don’t worry. Otto has got you covered with the option of buying a pre-made one, which can be baked at home when hosting a dinner party or having a cozy night in.

Bowl Market

Following the success of Bowlmarket on Gasværksvej, Vestebro, another branch was bound to spring up soon. Bowl Market 2.0, as I like to put it, is located in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Østerbro. The primary focus is on taking care of your breakfast and brunch needs with freshly baked bagels, porridge, and açai bowls. Founder Trey Greenwood explains, “Having lived in Los Angeles, bagels were a must-have. So I thought, how could I recreate that experience here in Copenhagen?”

This space is going to be local gem in the coming months. The stand-out menu item is the breakfast bagel sandwich, which is filled with creamy scrambled egg, turkey bacon, and cheese.

The NYC-style bagel is tasty, crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Did I mention that all bagels are handmade in-house? “We pride ourselves on quality, and you can see that reflected in the food and customer service,” say Trey.

During the lockdown, space is also operating as a convenience store, so be sure to pick up all your niche products, such as coffee beans from Coffee Collective, as well as craft beers from Mikkeller.

Mexihagen

“Not healthier – just better” is the slogan for new taco joint in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro. Hidden behind Lygten Plads you’ll find a food truck serving up reinvented Mexican taco classics. “After both of us were fired from our jobs at the airport due to COVID-19, we needed something else to do. So after a short break, we got up from our asses, no experience, and founded Mexihagen” says co-founder Asger.

What you notice with Mexihagen is the no fuss aspect of street food. Just pure joy of overindulging on grease & melting cheese. Can’t really beat that right? Dishes on the menu include taco birria and nacho’s with pico de salsa & guacamole.

Portions are “healthy” at Mexihagen; you definitely won’t go home hungry. Having tried the taco barrias & nachos, we can attest that the portion size is a bit overwhelming, but nevertheless a treat. Make sure to arrive hungry!
