April 2020 is a month like no other. While spring slowly takes over Copenhagen, we are collectively in quarantine, social distancing, or self-isolating. In times of Covid-19, philosophical questions around the meaning of home have become commonplace. With this in mind, this month’s calendar will be a quarantine edition, designed to give you a mental time-out and to help you entertain yourself a little, all while supporting local businesses and cultural institutions.
Stay safe and enjoy what Copenhagen has to offer from home this month, including virtual tours, digital events, and isolation activity ideas:
Thursday 9th – Monday 13th April
Make this year’s Easter celebration at home a special one! Set the table with your prettiest porcelain as well as fresh flowers and dish out traditional Danish Easter recipes like Marinated Herring, Cherry Koldskål, or Homemade snaps – anyone?
Thursday 9th April
The Thursday before Easter is a public holiday called Skærtorsedag, known as “Maudy Thursday” in English. It commemorates the last supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, and what better way to celebrate than with a nine-cabbage soup? Also known as Skærtorsdag søbekål, the soup was eaten because it was packed with nutrients that would ensure health for the coming year. As a bonus, the soup would ward off evil demons. Find an updated recipe for this 19th-century Danish classic as well as some background knowledge here.
