The Monthly Bite: Best New Openings in Copenhagen Vol. 4

Hola hola! Hope everyone had a great summer and is enjoying the start of fall, delighting in glorious meals, buttery pastries, boozy cocktails, and creamy lattes. But let’s face it, the weather is cold AF and I haven’t met anyone in Copenhagen that does not complain about it on a daily basis (it’s a national pastime!).

One of the great things about the oncoming colder months is that we go full-swing into hygge-mode. Food is a huge (and wonderful!) part of that process, and it leaves me feeling so blessed to be in this city.

What I adore about living in Copenhagen is that the quality of the city’s restaurant and other food/drink openings is both outstanding and high-volume. People from many different corners of the world flock all the way up north and end up opening new bars, eateries, cafés, ramen shops, pizzerias, beer bars, you name it!

This month I bring you three super cool recently-opened places: a ramen shop in Nørrebro, a bakery/café/pizzeria and eatery in Fredriksberg, and Copenhagen’s newest and most awesome (can one say awesomest?) (Editor’s note: no!) cocktail bar right in the heart of the city.

Here are the best new restaurant, bar, and cafe openings in Copenhagen:

Puss Puss

The history of the name of this outstanding cocktail bar is pretty cute. “Puss puss” means “kiss kiss” in Swedish, said as a goodbye to your loved ones.

Ted, the handsome, ridiculously friendly, and talented dude behind the bar greeted me with a smile as I arrived, and I was hooked; similar to the several (who’s keeping count?!) cocktails and spirits he had me try that evening.

Puss Puss is located right by Højbro bridge, a hotspot for restaurants, bars, and tourists walking by. It is a high-quality cocktail bar focusing on creating a fun, unique experience. Ted has won the Danish Championships of cocktails two years in a row, so he’s not messing around.

 

The cocktails I had that day compare to some of the best bites I have ever had. They all were unique, balanced, flavorful, complex yet unpretentious, boozy (money well-spent), and honest. They are not meant only impress a posh audience.

I asked Ted how he creates such wonderful flavor combinations and top quality drinks. He explained that he works with the best purveyors, crystal clear ice, and does a lot of research to obtain spirits that nobody in Copenhagen has ever heard of. That is so cool!

For these and a million other reasons (ahem, cocktails), you need to go to Puss Puss ASAP, get tipsy, and enjoy one of the best bars in Copenhagen. Skål!

Men-O Ramen

The team behind Men-O Ramen found themselves in Tokyo during the winter, hungry and in deep need of something substantial to warm up their stomachs. They came across a ramen shop and a romance began.

They decided then to set camp in Copenhagen, where it’s pretty much winter all the time, and deliver an authentic Japanese experience, sourcing produce locally and making the noodles fresh every single day.

The array of ramen broths and starters will, unless you somehow eat more than me, leave you beyond satisfied. The spicy Miso Ramen has a mixture of three miso pastes. Miso is fermented bean paste, a staple in Japanese cuisine and capable of turning simple food into great food. The spicy Miso Ramen was my favorite, although it was not spicy (so maybe they mean “spicy” in Scandinavian terms – as in, “not very”).

 

The Chicken Kaarage (chicken that has been marinated, then fried) was – holy shit – outstanding! Juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside; five heavenly bites. Pro tip ya’ll: throw a lot of togarashi (umami-bomb blend of spices, chili, citrus peels and sesame seeds) on every single bite!

The shop is located right in the border of Nørrebro and Fredriksberg, but to be honest it feels more Nørrebro-ish. Be it the crazy-colorful wall decorated with many famous Japanese cartoon characters, the delicious food, the friendly service staff, the passionate chefs making the noodles right in front of you, or…you know, the ramen, Men-O Ramen is indeed a restaurant that deserves more attention and a spot you need to add to your foodie list.

Babbo

I had my first bite of perfect sunny-side-up eggs, parmesan, olive oil, and delicious Fanø ham, Babbo became my current favorite eatery in Copenhagen. If anyone can make eggs, bread, cheese, and ham taste this damn good, then you KNOW the hype is real!

Babbo is an all-day eatery; those living in this neighborhood are so lucky! They open at 8:30 am and are ready with freshly baked sourdough, heavenly croissants, pastries, coffee and a 7-item menu of brunchy egg-based treats, I am hooked ya’ll! Does anybody in the vicinity need a roommate?

They transition into lunch at 1:00 pm with a couple of pasta dishes and two pizzas, all of which are made at the in-house bakery that you can see and smell. The smells… am I the only one who is powerless against the aroma of freshly baked bread?

 

 

The dinner menu starts at 5:30 pm and is reminiscent of an Italian “trattoria” but with an awesome Copenhagen tweak: charcuterie, burrata, ham, and (pay attention!) stracciatella with peaches and kale. Can you imagine?!

Pastas and pizzas complete the offer. For dessert, there’s tiramisu – one of my favorite desserts ever. They also offer a selection of wines, beer on tap and (pay attention again!) espresso martini ON TAP. This place is hot hot hot; I exaggerate not when I tell you that it is perfect for some solo time, a date, a break-up cheer-up, a business meeting, or whatever reason you need to go out and eat. I personally don’t need any reason, eating is my reason, and this place covers all the bases.
